How to Remove Center Speaker on the Dash

$

Q: Does any one has the experience on how to remove the dashboard speaker grill? Do I need some special to tool? A few days ago when I tried to use a flat plastic stick to unclench the mesh, it didn’t work and formed a small dent on the soft part of the dash. So this time I will try the way you suggested.

A: Get a bone tool or similar so you won’t mar or indent the dash where you pry. Once you get one side of it up simply gently grab it and pull upward.

Thank yuckuJackD so much for such detail PDF file and again thanks a lot for otis44 and FCPGroton for your helpful suggestion!!!

I made a hook this time, removed the speaker grill and found the reason of the speaker noise.

There was a small piece of paper (a label) on the top of the speaker which caused some noise when I played the music loud.

Driveshaft center bearing — 2002 V70 XC — replaceable?

$

I hope someone can help me figure out if the driveshaft center bearing for my 02 V70 XC AWD automatic is replaceable. I’m having a hard time finding information on replacing the center carrier bearing for my year and model.

Jay needs to know if the carrier bearing is replacable, and if so where to get one and how to do the replacement.

MVS Contributor CN90:

1. Mark the 2 halves BEFORE disassembly, otherwise you WILL have vibration!

The old carrier bearing: you can tap it out or use Angle Grinder (wear goggles!). Press the new bearing in:

  • Machine shop is best.
  • If no machine shop, then cut the old bearing INNER race as 2 halves, then wrap around the new bearing using a screw-clamp. Now tap on the old inner race using a drift, work slowly until it goes in.

PS: Your problem is how to find quality German-made bearing. Most of th bearings sold are Hamburg-Technic with Chinese bearing, which may be OK as this bearing does not do much other than supporting the weight of the DS.

SuperHerman:

Expanding on what cn90 stated in #3 – you can use the old inner race or something of similar diameter to push down on the inner race (not on the outside) and use a long hollow tube that sits on the old inner race and tap on that as it seats. You can also use a press with said set up.

For #2 the old bearing from what I have read gets seized onto the prop shaft and some time the only way to remove it is to cut it off with a grinder – outside first, then remove bearings, then inside. You may have to cut at an angle so you don’t cut into the prop shaft. When you get close hit it with a chisel and it should crack rather than grind all the way down.

MVS Moderator Abscate:

You can get a good used one form the guys in Utica, just East of You. I frequently drive through that area too if you are tight on dough and want to squeeze shipping costs out.

Bad MPG Solved

You’ve got to do this anyway to avoid a rear main seal leak (expensive), and in Redbox’s case at least, there’s an enormous side benefit of vastly improved fuel economy.

Redbox » I wanted to update this in case anyone checks it out. As stated, plugs and O2 sensor made no change. Yesterday I rebuilt the PCV system after failing the glove test. Not completely blocked, but pretty messed up. Took it for a good test drive today. Mileage went from 22 (before repair) to 29.3 mpg. No AC on. Nice.

If you can love it, you can lift it.

BULLOGNA » The answer is yes you can the rear was lifted via some adjustable spacers I got 2 1/4 inches lift in the rear and 1 3/4 lift in the in the front.. It needs a tweak here and there..

2002 S60 Power Steering – Replace Hard Lines

MVS Contributor coflynn writes up a fantastic How-To DIY on replacing the power steering lines on his 2002 S60 AWD. It’s a Class A writeup with photos, comments, lists of tools, detailed procedures and all the other things that make working on your car easier.

His lines are certainly more of an “edge case” condition because of his location — Halifax, Nova Scotia — which naturally is a salty environment. He chose to do the repair in-situ — meaning leaving the rack in rather than removing it.

coflynn »

I had a leak in my PS system. Originally I thought maybe it was seals & was going to dump some leak-stop in to see if it stopped. Luckily I decided to take a look anyway. The hard lines on my rack instead had corroded away. Leak-stop may have temporarily plugged the pinhole leak due to thicker fluid, but I’m almost positive that later I would have instead had a catastrophic failure instead. So better to check the issue!

The issue – the hard lines on your SMI power steering rack are leaking. Perhaps due to your salty environment, combined with your lack of using rust-proofing spray. Or you use rust-proofing and they didn’t reach the lines, since they are almost perfectly masked by the subframe. Now your lines look like this:

2002 S60 AWD -- the power steering hard lines had corroded away.
The hard lines on my rack instead had corroded away.

If you go anywhere they wanted to replace the rack, which the local aftermarket part was $900 for. I could get a better deal by mail-order but still had shipping to deal with (along with core return). I’d also just gotten an alignment & new inner tie rods so would have wasted that money too. I quickly tried getting a quote on replacing just the lines, but it was too risky for them to quote (what if the fittings broke off?). So instead was forced to mostly DIY.

However I was (almost) able to do this without removing the rack, and it is possible. This saves you a bit of hassle I think, but it’s still a very time-consuming job. If I was doing it again I would have tried harder to convince a mechanic to do the work instead. Overall I suspect it would have been as fast to remove the rack & replace the lines with the rack off the car.

Doing this you’ll need a few tools:

Festoon Bulbs

Festoon Bulbs usually are Double-Ended (DE) devils often vary by base (cap size), length and diameter even among same voltage and wattage. Even with SAEDIN, and ECE variations, this should help narrow things down* and rule out numbers for other voltages. The 1.2W vanity mirror bulb is conspicuously absent and non-standard.

* Length descriptions can vary by 4mm or more due to some measuring tip to tip, others like ECE use mid-tip-to-mid-tip where the bulb holder contacts rest, some listing what the bulb actually measures where as others list the MOL and MOD though the actual bulb may be smaller. Volvo describes the bulb for the side mirror or “Approach” light as “12.8 V, 11 W.” Aftermarket show others (e.g. 6W and 10W) some with 10mm glass, some with 16mm, but all with a W2.1×9.5d base (unknown if the 16mm will fit all housings). What ever is used, keep it below 11w. A W5W (2825) will work fine. Others one may encounter also shown for comparison. This photo shows the

3000-Series Bulbs

There is likely a good story behind the some of the redundancy for 3#5# bulbs, but I don’t have it. Some manufacturers list THREE different numbers on the same package in addition to A(mber) and K(rypton) variations. Double check the base and socket as noted below. (See Volvo table for bulbs in the 3000 range without a plastic wedge base, i.e. 3893 BA9s.)

Bulb Volt Amp Watt Base Notes
3057 12.8 V 2.1/0.48 A 26.9/6.14 W W2.5x16q (lower wattage low filament)
3157A 12.8 V 2.1/0.54 A 27.0/7.00 W W2.5x16q A(mber)
3357, 3457 12.8 V 2.1/0.59 A 26.9/7.55 W W2.5x16q
3457 12.8 V 2.1/0.59 A 26.9/7.55 W W2.5x16q Osram offers 3457A(mber)
3357NA 12.8 V 2.1/0.59 A 26.9/7.55 W W2.5x16q N(atural)A(mber)
3757A(K) 12.8 V 2.1/0.59 A 26.9/7.55 W W2.5x16q A(mber), K(rypton)
PY27/7W 12 V 27.0/7.00 W WX2.5x16q ECE

sylvania-automotive.com has good bulb info, including W2.5×16d, W2.5×16q, and WX2.5x16q bases that the 3000-series bulbs use which may prevent one type from being installed in another.

Note: The manual for a 1998 S70 also lists 3357 NA, but due to Recall ID # 6397 – EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNAL Recall Date: DEC 06, 2000

“There could be inadequate contact between the bulb and socket which could cause the front turn signal not to function as designed. … Dealers will replace the left and right front turn signal <+ park light> bulb and socket.”

… one might encounter BAY15d sockets and 1157NA bulbs instead.

I suspect a Volvo bean counter tried replacing two single-filament bulbs (front park and turn) and their sockets with one dual-filament.

Since there was no dual-intensity amber ECE bulb, they tried an Ford-like amber 3#57 style bulb, but the cheaper plastic base didn’t hold up under continuous use (night and DRL), began to give, and contacts got dodgy. The quick fix for the one-hole lens was for dealers to retrofit metal-base 1157NA (SAE) bulbs and sockets while going with two separate bulbs in the future. By contrast, Japanese automakers went with large all-glass wedge bulbs like the 7443NA (dual-filament, amber, and sometimes referred to as “WY21/5W” though not an ECE designation).

This is What Volvo Forums Looked Like in 2002

This is what MVS Volvo forums looked like in 2002.

The early P2 cars were on Volvo dealer showroom floors. EVs were conceptual futurism, not counting the handful of mass-market vehicle electrification business failures. The Segway was set to change the way we moved around cities. “Crossover” was a term used most often in dance instruction settings.

For more MVS/Volvo forums background, see my MVS birthday post, which has become somewhat of a MVS history post.

2004 V70 2.5T with 104K miles – Engine Sludge

cn90 »

The car is 2004 V70 2.5T with 104K miles. All maintenance up-to-date (Timing Belt at 95K, PCV etc.). Car was serviced exclusively at Volvo dealer. I am the 3rd owner.

engine sludge under filler cap on grate
Sludge

– Car has slight lifter noise (more than my 2005 XC90 2.5T with 115K, which has exactly the same engine), but overall runs fine, good acceleration on highway, good gas mileage. Car drives great.

– Opened the Oil Filler Cap and saw some sludge. I am from BMW and Volvo forums and am familiar with this issue of engine sludge, but need some updated responses from the “sludge gurus”…..

  1. Some people say this black stuff seen on the grates inside the oil filler cap is “normal”, is this true?
  2. I have used Liqui Moly 2037 Pro-Line Engine Flush in my 2006 BMW X5 on a preventive basis (no issue but I did it for the heck of it).
This is the product I am talking about:

    – Anyone with sludge and has any success with this?
  3. Some people say forget about Liqui Moly flush and simply use synthetic oil and change frequently, such as every 1K-2K, as the detergent inside the synthetic oil will clean the sludge. Is this true?
  4. Any other advices from the “sludge gurus”?

The fire suppression oil filler grates magnify the sludge. They are never as bad as it looks on the grate. BUT that sludge in the picture probably means that engine has some moderate deposits. I’d put it on a diet of 2500 mile oil changes with synthetic oil. Don’t spend big on the oil, WalMart synthetic would be fine. The last day before the change give it some sea foam at a low dose in oil to do a mild flush.

I have done away with the grates on a couple of mine. On one I tapped it with punch and hammer at the two locations where the tabs attach it It came out and left holes that I used short machine screws, nuts, loctite and two small washers with RTV sealer to close up. No leaks and I can see inside. I came across a broken head and it was a wreck injured engine old enough to not have the grate. I slide hammered the filler out and drove the new one in with a thin film of RTV on the filler to assure it sealed (it did). Of course that spoils my plans of driving those to with the oil filler cap off.

Drawing of Thor’s hammer amulet

Thor’s Hammer is the nickname given to Volvo headlights since the second-generation XC90 debuted in 2015 on the SPA platform. It’s a distinctive shape that, well, looks like a hammer ;-). The headlights got the moniker Thor’s hammer because Volvo is Swedish, and modern-day Sweden was the center of the Viking Age.

In Norse mythology, Thor is the hammer-wielding god of thunder, lightning, storms, oak trees, strength, the protection of mankind, in addition to hallowing, and fertility. — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thor

Since the XC90, Volvo has designed and released all their many new models with this headlight shape: the V90, V90 Cross Country, S90, V60 and even the CMA platform XC40.

And now, today (June 20, 2018), Volvo will release the new S60. Guess what the headlights resemble?

“The driving experiences are totally different. The 98 feels like an older car, but still has enough luxury to make it very comfortable. I feel much more connected to the mechanics on the 98. The 05 feels like the newer cars and I feel removed from it. Yeah its nice, but not the same. Some would say for the better, but not me. I also prefer the throttle response on the earlier one.” MVS Forums Contributor Clockboy  https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=473120#p473120
